SENIOR TOURISM SALES MANAGER

REPORTS TO:  Director, Tourism
DIVISION:  Sales

POSITION SUMMARY

The senior tourism sales manager promotes and sells Columbus as a leisure destination for group tours to tour operators, bus companies and wholesalers. Achieves specific individual and team sales quotas.  Works on product development in response to current industry trends when necessary.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Sell Columbus to assigned market segments through direct sales, telemarketing, and other sales efforts.  Will require the willingness and ability to travel.
  • Implement ongoing strategic prospecting that includes identifying, prioritizing and working the targeted prospect lists.
  • Develop product and itineraries targeted at assigned market segments.
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct site inspections and familiarization tours for assigned market segments.
  • Make presentations and/or attend travel trade shows in order to secure leads and/or book business.
  • Maintain and develop the D3000 database for assigned market segment in a timely, thorough manner. 
  • Generate and issue sales leads to Experience Columbus members and members of the Columbus Motorcoach Council.
  • Stay current on the trends of the group tour market and direct the department’s group tour sales and marketing activities accordingly.  This can include new product development.
  • Direct the Columbus Motorcoach Council initiative.
  • Develop the project budgets for your assigned market segment and work responsibly within those approved budgets.
  • Provide recommendations for advertising to the group tour market, the development of the group tour section of the Experience Columbus Web site, and the content for the Tour Planner Guide, Touring Columbus and Columbus Coach publications.
  • Develop and maintain existing relationships with industry organizations such as NTA, ABA, OBOA, OTA and the Ohio Division of Travel & Tourism.   
  • Represent the tourism department at various Bureau departmental programs, events and speaking engagements. 
  • Attend Tourism Committee meetings and conduct presentations to the committee as needed. 
  • Serve as a liaison with the local, state, regional and national group tour industry. 
  • Attend Experience Columbus and community functions when available.

QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of five years experience in hotel or convention bureau sales is preferred; sales account management experience; degree from an accredited institution in hospitality management or marketing is preferred.  Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to deal well with a wide variety of people; ability to handle multiple projects; well organized; detail oriented, excellent customer service skills; professional and personable manner; keen awareness to developments in the community and hospitality industry; strong knowledge of Columbus and Ohio in the tourism and travel industry. Ability to travel, attend local, regional, national events on evenings and/or weekends. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and D3000 software.

Base pay for most positions begins at $6.85/hr. with an additional $.50/hr. bonus program.  On average employees work a 48-hour workweek.  Low cost housing is available for applicants who qualify.
